Running on the 4th of July has become a tradition for many Americans. The 4th of July is one of the biggest running days of the year, right up there with Thanksgiving. It’s a great way to start the day, get some exercise, and participate in a community event.
Aside from the community aspect, running on the 4th of July can be a great way to celebrate the country’s independence. It’s a reminder of the freedom and independence that we as Americans enjoy and can be a way to honor the men and women who fought for our freedoms.
4th of July Races
Many cities across the country host 4th of July races, from 5Ks to marathons, with participants of all ages and abilities. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a challenging course or a fun run for the whole family, there’s a race out there for you.
- One of the most famous 4th of July races is the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s a 10K race that attracts tens of thousands of runners every year. The race has become a tradition for many families, with the inclusion of the one mile AJC Peachtree Jr. for kids.
- Bix 7 – This is a 7-mile race held in Davenport, Iowa that attracts over 10,000 runners every year. The race is known for its challenging hills and festive atmosphere.
- Boilermaker Road Race – This is a 15K race held in Utica, New York that has been running since 1978. It’s known for its challenging course and post-race party. The Boilermaker also includes a 5K for runners who are not up to taking on the 9.3 miles just yet.
- Crown City Classic – This is a 5K race held in Coronado, California that attracts over 10,000 runners every year. It’s known for its scenic course and ocean views. The Crown City Classic also has a 12K for runners looking for more of a challenge, as well as a kids half mile race.
- NYCRUNS Firecracker 5K & 10K – This race will give you all the feels of the Independence Day holiday! The event begins with a ferry ride to Governors Island. The course takes you around the island and gives you amazing views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan and Brooklyn. Then stick around for the post-race party.

4th of July Running Tips
